Harper Woods is just under 3 square miles and boarders Detroit, Eastpointe and Saint Clair Shores. The population is just over 14,000 people and the town refers to itself as “A Proud Spirited Community.” The city of Harper Woods was incorporated in 1851 and the first city council was sworn in after the Charter took effect eight months later. The first town resident was a man named Casper Salter who settled on a piece of land along a horse and wagon road called Pumpkin Hook Road. Today that road is called Kelly Road. Within five years there were eleven families living along that road. The busy road we now call Gratiot was first cleared in 1782 and the only businesses were a blacksmith, a wagon maker, the general store and a saloon. The city grew slowly and by 1935 there were still only about fifty family homes along Gratiot but after the Great Depression a growth spurt occurred and the population grew to just over 800 people. Eventually new businesses set up shop and younger families started moving in. In these early days the roads weren’t paved and there were no sewers so the town suffered from flooding, but despite that, the town’s population began to explode. It doubled in the ten years between 1950 and 1960. The well-known Harper Hospital and Harper Avenue were named after Walter Harper who founded the hospital. Paved streets and plumbing didn’t get established until the early 1950”s and the expresswayI-94 and the Eastland Mall were completed between 1957 and 1960.
