The world’s largest permanent exhibition of African American history and culture was the vision of Dr. Charles H. Wright, who founded the International Afro-American Museum in 1965. In 1985, ground was broken on Warren Avenue and renamed Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, in honor of its founder. The museum is located in the heart of Midtown, where the current 120,000 square foot facility houses collections that constitute the permanent exhibition as well as rotating presentations. In addition to exhibiting artifacts, the museum offers a full program of rich community events and activities. In the 317-seat General Motors Theater, the museum shows films, hosts lectures and presents live performances.

The 22,000 square foot permanent exhibition is made up of more than twenty galleries that take visitors on a chronological and geographical journey, detailing the intricate and beautiful culture and heartbreaking struggles of African Americans, while celebrating the men, women and families who founded businesses, educational institutions civic organizations and spiritual traditions that shaped the world. The collection that began with masks from Nigeria and Ghana has grown to more than 30,000 artifacts and archival materials. Current exhibitions include a representation and reflection of African American culture through dolls created for children and pieces of art. In the exhibit entitled “Inspiring Minds: African Americans in Science and Technology,” visitors will learn the stories of African Americans who have made contributions to mathematics, earth and physical sciences, life sciences and technology and engineering. This interactive experience features hands-on areas that teach principles of engineering, a touch-screen video wall, and interactive computer kiosks that demonstrate the advances celebrated in the exhibition.
